Android app development with Kotlin and Jetpack Compose
Sortia Labs builds native Android apps with Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, from the first screen design to the release on Google Play. We run several apps of our own in the Play Store, so we know not only the code but also test tracks, policies and the yearly requirements from Google.

What a good Android app needs
Native with Kotlin and Compose
We write Android apps in Kotlin with Jetpack Compose, the toolkit Google recommends for Android interfaces today. The code follows common patterns, so other Android developers find their way around quickly.
Work offline, sync later
Data is kept on the device too; entries made without a connection wait in a queue and go out once the network is back. The web app and the Android app work on the same data.
Notifications and background work
Reminders at the right moment, recordings or uploads that keep running in the background: we design such services to fit the battery and background rules of current Android versions.
More than one screen
Android offers its own ways into everyday work: a tile in Quick Settings, a custom keyboard or a floating button over other apps. We use them where they save effort.
Privacy on the phone
Only the permissions a feature needs, consent before sensitive data and encryption on the device where content is confidential. That way the declarations in the Play Store match what the app really does.
How your app gets into the Play Store
- 1
Concept and design
Which tasks do your users handle on the move, which at the desk? That shapes the screens of the app, first as a clickable design on the phone.
- 2
Test builds for your team
Through an internal test track on Google Play your team installs every new version on their own devices, so you see early how the app works in real use.
- 3
Release
Store listing, screenshots and the data safety form, then the review by Google. We prepare the documents and handle questions from the Play Console.
- 4
Ongoing care
After the launch we review crash reports and ratings, fix errors and ship new features in small releases that go through the test track again first.
Software we build and run ourselves.
Questions about Android app development
Why native Kotlin and not cross-platform?
A native app uses Android directly: background services, notifications, keyboards or tiles without detours. If you need iPhone and Android equally from day one, a cross-platform approach or a progressive web app can be cheaper. We tell you openly what fits your case.
What about iPhone users?
Our focus is Android. We reach iPhone users with a web app or progressive web app on the same backend; for native iOS apps we work with partners. Data and logic then stay in one place.
Under whose name does the app appear on Google Play?
Usually under your company's developer account, so the app, its ratings and its statistics belong to you. For an organisation account Google asks for a D-U-N-S number. We help with the setup and upload new releases for you if you like.
What happens after the release?
Android and Google Play keep moving: every year Google requires a newer target API level before updates are accepted, and policies change. If you want, we take over maintenance and plan these changes in good time, so your app stays current.
