PostgreSQL consulting and operations from one team
PostgreSQL is open, mature and can be extended for a wide range of tasks. Sortia Labs sets up PostgreSQL for companies in Munich and across Germany, tunes it to your workload, builds replication and backups and looks after day-to-day operations. Our own products Postkey and Tempo currently run on PostgreSQL as well.

Our PostgreSQL work
Setup and configuration
PostgreSQL on your own servers, on AWS or Azure, or on Kubernetes with CloudNativePG. We size memory, connections and checkpoints for your workload, because the defaults of a fresh installation are deliberately conservative.
Autovacuum and table maintenance
PostgreSQL keeps old row versions until autovacuum cleans them up. When it falls behind, tables and indexes bloat and queries slow down. We tune it per table and find the long transactions that block it.
Replication with Patroni
Streaming replication to one or more standby servers, automatic failover with Patroni and connection pooling with pgBouncer. We rehearse the switch-over together with your team before the cluster goes into production.
Major version upgrades
A version jump needs a plan: we check extensions, rehearse the upgrade on a copy of your production data and choose pg_upgrade or logical replication, depending on how short the interruption has to be.
Extensions such as pgvector
With pgvector, PostgreSQL stores vectors for AI-assisted search right next to your business data, without an extra database. We check which extensions your platform supports and how they affect backups and upgrades.
How we approach PostgreSQL
- 1
Review
We review configuration, statistics, replication state and backup logs and talk to your developers. The result is a report with risks and immediate actions.
- 2
Implementation
Changes are tried in a test environment first. Anything that needs a restart goes into an agreed maintenance window; much of the rest can be changed while the system runs.
- 3
Ongoing support
If you like, we take over monitoring, updates and backup checks on an ongoing basis. Or we train your team and remain available for the difficult cases.
Software we build and run ourselves.
Questions about PostgreSQL
How long is a PostgreSQL version supported?
The PostgreSQL community maintains each major version for five years. Bug and security fixes come as minor releases roughly every quarter; they do not change the data format and should be applied promptly. Plan the move to a new major version before the old one drops out of support.
Do we need pgBouncer?
Every PostgreSQL connection is a separate process with its own memory. When many application servers, PHP workers or functions open short-lived connections, pgBouncer bundles them onto a few real ones and takes load off the server. A single application with its own well-tuned pool often does without it.
Is PostgreSQL suitable for large amounts of data?
Yes, with the right design. Partitioning splits large tables by time or tenant, suitable indexes keep queries fast, and read replicas take over reporting. What matters more than raw size is write load, maintenance windows and recovery time, which we plan for from the start.
Do you also look after PostgreSQL on AWS or Azure?
Yes. With managed services the provider takes care of hardware, patches and snapshots. Queries, indexes, parameters, connections and cost remain your job, and that is exactly where we help, as well as with moves between the cloud and your own servers.
